Our Curriculum

Glisten International Academy runs an integrated curriculum (Nigerian and British Curricula), with structures that support personalization of learning, resulting in all-around success for our students’ cognitive, emotional, and psycho-motor development. Our aim is to go beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge to encouragecharacter development, creativity, and innovation, based on the higher order thinking. Our curriculum is not static and it prepares learners for life so that they can be productive and be of value to themselves, the society and the world at large.

 

Therefore, students and pupils will be guided to:

Learning in our school is organised thus:

 

Early Year Foundation School (EYFS)(18 months to 5 Years)

The levels in the EYFS are:

1. Play-Group
2. Discovery I
3. Discovery II
4. Foundation
 

In the EYFS, learning focuses on basic areas of cognitive, affective,and psychomotor development of the child to prepare them for school. The learning areas are as follows:

1. Language and communication Skills (Literacy emphasis)
2. Problem Solving and Reasoning Skills (Numeracy emphasis)
3. Personal Social and Emotional Development Skills
4. Knowledge and Understanding of the World
5. Physical and Health Development
6. Creative Arts
7. Rhymes
8. Handwriting
9. Phonics
10. Computer.
 

In our classrooms we use age-appropriate activities and learning tools, to create a flexible environment to meet the needs and interests of every child in our care.

 

Primary School (5 to 11 years)

The levels in the Primary school are:

1. Year 1
2. Year 2
3. Year 3
4. Year 4
5. Year 5
6. Year 6

 

Teaching at this stage encourages independent and experiential Learning that spurs critical thinking. The subjects taught under this level is integrated with the Cambridge Checkpoint Key stage 1 and 2 curricula. Subjects include:

1. English Language (including verbal Reasoning)
2. Mathematics (including quantitative Reasoning)
3. Basic Science and Technology
4. National Values (integrated with global perspectives)
5. Prevocational Studies (an integration of Home Economics and Agricultural Science)
6. Cultural and Creative Arts (integration of music and virtual Arts)
7. Religious Studies (Christian and Islamic Religious studies, taught separately)
8. Computer Science (including robotics and coding)
9. French
10. Handwriting
 

Highly qualified and experienced teachers guide our students; they are aided by well- equipped learning spaces and teaching aids to make teaching and learning interesting in all subject areas.

 

Junior Secondary School (11 to 14 years)

The levels in the Junior Secondary are:

1. Year 7
2. Year 8
3. Year 9
 

The curriculum consists of a wide range of learning experiences which gives a balanced grounding in all main subjects. The learning and teaching strategies includes innovative skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity; information and communication technology to help students become creative and life-long learners, among others. Subjects taught under this include:

2. Mathematics
3. Basic Science, and Technology
4. National Values (including civic, social and security education and global perspectives)
5. Cultural and Creative Arts (integration of music and virtual Arts)
6. Prevocational Education (integration of home economics and agricultural science)
7. Religious Studies (Christian and Islamic Religious studies taught separately)
8. Business Studies
9. French Language
10. Arabic Language
11. Computer Science (including robotics and programming)
12. Physical Education

 

All students learn through a common course of study that is differentiated to meet their needs and interests. The appreciation and application of ICT in the everyday learning and teaching is highly emphasised and cuts across all subjects offered.

 

Senior Secondary (14 to 17 years)

The levels in the Senior Secondary are:

1. Year 10
2. Year 11
3. Year 12
 

All previous curricula culminates to this stage. We use the information from the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Federal Capital Territory Educational Resource Centre (FCT-ERC) and the cumulative of the Year 7, 8 and 9 of our own internal assessments to make sure students are rightly placed in any of the four different class classifications, viz.: science, technology, humanities and business/commercial.

Students are expected to offer the four core/compulsory subjects and any other five subjects from the other structures.

As a school we offer the students guidance and counselling in the selection of the subjects, minding the career interest and aptitude of the students while considering the prerequisite subject combination for eligibility for post-secondary education.
